The thyroid collar is typically made of lead or lead-equivalent material, which is effective at blocking radiation. It is designed to cover the front of the neck, specifically the thyroid gland, and is securely fastened in place during the imaging procedure. The collar acts as a barrier, absorbing and reducing the amount of radiation that reaches the thyroid gland.
