Heparin Cannula

A heparin cannula, also known as a heparin lock or a heparinized saline lock, is a medical device used in healthcare settings to maintain patency and prevent clotting in intravenous (IV) lines or catheters when they are not in use. The purpose of a heparin cannula is to prevent the formation of blood clots within the IV line, which can impede blood flow and potentially cause complications such as occlusion or thrombophlebitis. Heparin, an anticoagulant medication, is used to prevent clot formation in the line.

The heparin cannula consists of a small plastic or metal hub with a self-sealing valve and a side port. The side port allows for the administration of heparinized saline solution into the line. The heparin solution helps to maintain the patency of the line by preventing clot formation.

To use a heparin cannula, healthcare professionals flush the IV line with normal saline to ensure it is clear and functioning properly. Then, they use a syringe to instill a small amount of heparinized saline solution into the side port of the cannula, which fills the line with the solution. The self-sealing valve prevents the solution from leaking out of the line. This process is typically done periodically, such as every 4 to 8 hours, depending on the healthcare facility’s protocols.

By using a heparin cannula, healthcare providers can keep IV lines open and prevent clotting when the line is not actively in use, which allows for easier and quicker access for medication administration or blood draws when needed.
